-with a little help from my friends.  Picked up 7 Blue Oat Grass and 6 Ruby Star Purple cone flowers- both native and drought resistant plants that should survive a harsh Chicago alley environment (knock on wood).    Rather than turn our back on the alley, we chose to embrace it.

The compost- GROSS! but oh so good.
